How To Make Your Own Moisturiser: Home-Made Moisturisers

If you're looking for a way to save money and make your own beauty products, why not try making your own moisturiser? With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a homemade moisturiser that's perfect for you.

Benefits Of Using A Home-Made Moisturiser

There are many benefits to homemade moisturiser, including:

  • you can tailor it to your skin type and needs
  • it's often more affordable than store-bought options
  • home-made moisturisers are often more gentle
  • it's easier to avoid any potential allergens or irritants.

Not to mention, it's pretty easy to whip up a batch of homemade moisturiser with just a few simple ingredients.

Top Tips For Making Your Own Moisturiser

The most important thing to choose when making homemade moisturiser is the right carrier oil. This will be the base of your recipe and will help to determine how nourishing and hydrating your final product will be.

Some good options include jojoba oil, coconut oil and almond oil. Once you've chosen your carrier oil, you can then add in other ingredients like essential oils and Vitamin E for additional benefits.

Homemade Moisturiser Recipe

Using this moisturiser recipe, you will end up with a hydrating emollient moisturiser – adjusting your choice of ingredients can make it more suitable to your skin type.

Ingredients

What You'll Need:

  • 1/4 cup of carrier oil (olive oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, etc.)
  • 1/4 cup of beeswax pastilles
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 10 drops of essential oils (optional)
  • A glass jar or container with a lid

Steps

  1. Combine the carrier oil and beeswax in a double boiler or a glass bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water.
  2. Stir the mixture until the beeswax has melted, then remove from heat.
  3. Add the honey and essential oils (if using), and stir to combine.
  4. Pour the mixture into your glass jar or container, and allow it to cool and solidify before screwing on the lid.

To use, simply massage a small amount of moisturiser into your skin as needed.

How Long Will Homemade Moisturiser Last For?

Dr Anna Chacon advises that "If you are not using any preservative or using ingredients that are perishable, typically it will only last for a week or two".

Store Your Home-Made Moisturiser Properly

Store your homemade moisturiser in a dark glass jar in a cool, dry place and enjoy smooth, healthy skin all year long!

Another option is to make an aloe vera gel moisturiser.

Simply blend aloe vera gel with a few drops of jojoba oil or rosehip oil. For an extra boost of hydration, add a teaspoon of honey to the mixture. This moisturiser can be stored in the fridge for up to two weeks.

What supplements should I take daily?

If you follow a well-balanced and healthy diet, every day, your body should be getting the right amount of nutrients it needs. However, ensuring you have the right amounts of each nutrient, across vitamins, minerals, proteins, amino acids and more, is difficult to track. And that's before you consider any restrictions, such as if you have allergies to certain foods or are following a vegan diet.

You should speak to your GP if you think you need to take daily supplements, as they can advise what you might need based on your eating habits and lifestyle. As a starting point, you can find the recommended daily amounts of vitamins and minerals in our glossaries:

Do supplements really work?

Yes, supplements really work. They supply your body with the vitamins, minerals and/or other nutrients in doses that can be absorbed by your body. It's hard to define how necessary supplements are as it will depend on your eating habits and lifestyle. However, in general, Western society has moved away from the kinds of nutritionally balanced diets that would allow us to get all the nutrients we require – hence people consider supplementation. There are times when supplements are considered a necessity, such as during pregnancy when pregnancy supplements are NHS recommended regardless of how balanced the pregnant person's diet is.

What supplements should men and women take daily?

There are some vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are recommended for everyone to take and there are some that are needed in different amounts, typically, for men and women. This is why we have supplements for women and supplements for men that are sold separately – it's not just a marketing choice. If you aren't sure what daily supplements you should take, then speak to your GP and get their advice.
