Borage Oil

Borage oil supplements are a rich natural source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that may help support skin health, hormonal balance and joint comfort. Extracted from the seeds of the borage plant (Borago officinalis), this nutrient-dense oil has been used traditionally to help maintain healthy skin barrier function and ease inflammation-related discomfort.

Studies suggest that GLA from borage oil may help reduce dryness and irritation in sensitive skin, while also supporting women’s health during the menstrual cycle and menopause. Available in capsules and liquid form, it can be easily added to your daily routine for targeted omega-6 support.

All you need to know about Borage Oil

What is borage oil good for?

As it is rich in fatty acids, borage seed oil is very beneficial to the body's immune system, and also helps to ease problems with the joints, joint pain and inflammation. It has been suggested that borage oil can help ease symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Borage seed oil contains high levels (20-26%) of omega-6 fatty acids, known as gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and linolenic acid (LA). These acids are very important for cell health, function and structure. Your body converts GLA and LA into prostaglandins, which help to regulate the immune system and fight inflammation.

What are the side effects of borage oil?

Side effects of borage oil include feeling sick, an upset stomach, digestive problems, skin rashes and headaches, although all of these symptoms are often reported to be mild. Some borage oils also contain toxins that could be bad for your liver. If you take anti-inflammatory medications such as cortisone, you should consult with your GP before taking borage oil. Some sedatives and medications for high blood pressure can reduce the effects of borage oil.

Is borage oil good for your skin?

For those struggling with skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and dermatitis, taking borage seed oil supplements may help. This is because borage seed oil can help to improve your skin's essential protective barrier (the epidermis), because of its high levels of GLA. It is lighter than many other oils, and is soothing to the skin if applied externally.

Is borage oil bad for your liver?

If you have liver disease or a liver condition, you should not take borage oil. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also avoid taking borage oil supplements. Always consult your GP before taking any supplements.
