All you need to know about Calcium

Which foods are high in calcium?

Our bodies cannot produce calcium naturally, which is why it is so important that we get the calcium we need through our diets. If you don't get enough calcium, you may start to experience problems with your teeth and bones. You can get calcium naturally through eating dairy like yogurt and cheese, and by drinking milk. Soya products like tofu and beans also contain high levels of calcium, as well as nuts and leafy greens like spinach.

How much calcium do I need per day?

It is recommended that the average adult has a calcium intake of 700mg per day. Usually, you can get all the calcium you require through a naturally balanced diet. For some people however, this may be more challenging, and a calcium supplement may be beneficial. Many calcium tablets also contain nutrients such as zinc and magnesium, or vitamin D. If you feel you might be lacking in calcium, speak to your GP to see if you should be taking supplements, as taking too much calcium can be as bad for you as too little calcium.

Is calcium or vitamin D better for bones?

Your body needs both vitamin D and calcium in order to function healthily. Vitamin D is vital to bone health and works in tandem with calcium, as it helps to increase the absorption of calcium in your gut. If you do not get enough vitamin D, your body can only absorb up to 15% of the calcium you get from your diet.

Can calcium supplements be harmful?

There has been inconclusive evidence that calcium supplements are harmful, but the best way to get calcium is always through your diet. You should speak to your doctor if you feel you are lacking in calcium.
