Dong Quai

Dong quai has been used for over 1,500 years in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat various women's health issues, including menstrual disorders, menopause symptoms, and overall reproductive health.

Dong quai is rich in phytoestrogens, which may help balance hormones and alleviate symptoms such as hot flashes and menstrual cramps. Additionally, it is believed to support fertility by promoting healthy blood flow to the reproductive organs, potentially supporting fertility. Dong quai also possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it beneficial for overall health.

All you need to know about Dong Quai

What are the benefits of Dong Quai?

A herb traditionally used in Chinese medicine, Dong Quai belongs to the celery family and its roots have been used for hundreds of years to treat a wide variety of complaints including high blood pressure, headaches, PMS, stomach cramps (particularly in menstruation), nasal congestion and arthritis. It has been suggested that Dong Quai is rich in anti-inflammatory properties, and helps to boost the immune system.

What are the side effects of Dong Quai?

Dong Quai side effects are mild, but some people who take the supplement have reported tiredness, headaches, low blood sugar, low blood pressure, feeling sick and an unsettled stomach. Dong Quai is not advised for long-term use or for pregnant women, as it stimulates uterine muscles, which could lead to miscarriage. It is also not recommended for use during breastfeeding. Dong Quai shouldn't be taken with drugs that affect blood clotting such as warfarin (Coumadin), due to its effects on the blood.

Can Dong Quai balance hormones?

In traditional Chinese medicine, Dong Quai is known as the 'female ginseng'. It is used to treat conditions and symptoms that are associated with hormone imbalances and hormone-related conditions. This includes problems with menstruation and menstrual flow, and painful periods (dysmenorrhea). It has also been used to treat hot flushes and temperature fluctuations associated with the menopause.

Can Dong Quai induce periods?

Dong Quai has long been used as a herbal remedy for inducing a period. It is believed that the supplement brings on a period by boosting blood to the pelvic area, while stimulating muscles in the uterus. This triggers uterine contractions, which help to bring on menstruation. If there is a chance that you might be pregnant, it is not advisable to take Dong Quai, as it could terminate your pregnancy.
